just look a little closer.

Personal Statement

I have always been fascinated with the medical world and how the body works. I have continuously felt a strong pull toward the medical field and have always felt comfortable in this particular setting. Whether it was trying to save the catfish that washed up in my backyard or being the first six-year old nurse to take care of my brother after jaw surgery, I have always had the need to help and develop relationships through my enthusiastic and nurturing nature. The combination of my academic, professional and personal knowledge has made me into a person who takes initiative through hard work, reliability and dedication.

My undergraduate experience at the University of Florida and the rigorous coursework that I have completed has prepared me more than enough to manage my time and maintain my drive. Juggling my schoolwork and being the Vice President of Foundation of my sorority, as well as holding many other prestigious positions on campus, has proved to be challenging. Yet, because of the love I have for my positions and the passion I have for becoming a nurse, I dedicate as much time as I can to creating changes, organizing events and supporting my sisters, while still managing to volunteer, keep up my grades and focus on school. Through these experiences, I have learned to work with a team and how to lead, which is essential in the practice of nursing.

My recent encounters with a woman named Lenora have helped to solidify my interest in becoming a nurse practitioner. Lenora is a woman with visual impairments, but other than her white cane, you would never know she is someone with a disability. Whether it is holding fundraisers for people less fortunate than she, or going to Dance Marathon to support all the students, Lenora continuously finds a way to help someone else. It amazes me how this one person, who is so-called "handicapped," volunteers to do so much for other people. Instead of sitting at home, feeling sorry about the life that has been dealt to her, she is continuously doing things for others and taking the initiative. Lenora made me realize that one of the greatest joys in life comes from extending a hand to someone else. I didn't comprehend at the time of applying for vice president, how much I would gain from it and what a wonderful new friend I would make. I have learned what patience and dedication truly mean and have most definitely incorporated this understanding into my own life. Entering the world of medicine and becoming a Nurse Practitioner will give me the perfect outlet for my ambitions and skills. I can only imagine how much more I can do for others with the tools of medicine.

After I receive my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida, I intend to apply to the Accelerated Second Degree Nursing program at the University of Florida. I anticipate that with my dedication and the expertise I will gain in the Accelerated BSN program, I will be prepared to go directly on to pursue my Masters of Science in Nursing. After I receive my MSN, I hope to have the opportunity to work for a physician in a Family Practice office or possibly in an outpatient clinic in a hospital.
